Participants started their day with a fun session from the Cal Ripken Sr, Foundation learning about the many ways their Badges for Baseball curriculum can be used with students. They had a chance to apply what they learned in a game of Quickball where they worked up a hunger right in time for lunch. After lunch, the Beau Biden Foundation conducted a Stewards of Children® training which helps adults be better equipped to protect children from abuse. DMV PAL staff discussed various policies and procedures that will aid in the continued success of sites moving forward. DMV PAL is excited to see how the sites will thrive with this acquired knowledge.
Metropolitan Police Department and the DMV Police Athletic League hosted a basketball clinic in conjunction with the National Basketball Retired Players Association and The Leadership Foundation on Saturday, September 1st 2018 at Deanwood Recreation Center in Ward Seven for nearly 100 youth from the District. The day-long basketball clinic, Full Court Press: Prep for Success, provided youth the chance to interact with law enforcement in a safe social environment and officers to engage directly with the community they serve day in and day out.
Students participated in courses on the court that reviewed the fundamentals of basketball through a variety of drills while learning about the value of leadership, teamwork, accountability, and other skills valuable to anyone’s success. Off the court, presenters from Metropolitan Police Department, The Leadership Foundation, and the former professional players talked with students candidly about making smart decisions for the future. The day was topped off with lunch, a riveting scrimmage amongst the youth, and a book bag giveaway to support the students’ academic endeavors.
Today, DMV PAL had the pleasure of joining the Annapolis/Anne Arundel County Boys and Girls Club of America (a DMV PAL Affiliate) at their Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation Day of Play event. Louie and Rocko from the Bowie Baysox were even in attendance! There were different stations of fun set up, including Quick Ball (adaptation from Badges for Baseball program,) soccer, football drills, dodgeball and more. The Annapolis Police Department brought out their SWAT Team and K-9 unit to put on awesome presentations for the youth, before rounding out the day with a delicious boxed lunch. The youth received reusable shopping bags full of goodies and recipes from the Maryland Food Bank, to create healthy meals at home with their families. We had an awesome time interacting with the youth and seeing the bright smiles on their faces made the already great day, even better!
We are anxiously awaiting the start of this year's National PAL Youth Mentoring Summit. This multi-day event will be in DMV PAL's backyard of Potomac, Maryland. PAL chapters from across the country congregate together in hopes of building new relationships and soaking up knowledge through a variety of workshops. We are excited to return this year and see what new ways we can best support those involved with DMV PAL.
DMV PAL had the pleasure of traveling to Miami, Florida last week to attend the 74th annual National PAL Conference. The sunshine state provided a beautiful backdrop as participants were able to attend a variety of engaging sessions. We had the opportunity to fellowship with PAL chapters from across the country to learn more about their best practices and the innovative programs they are creating. The last night was one for the books with a performance from Miami PAL's dance team and PAL kids recalling how much their lives have been impacted by the organization. We are excited to apply everything we learned at the conference to the work we are doing in the DMV area.
